I like to create paintings that capture the look and feel of the effects of time -- two thousand year old Roman walls, the stained rocks of the Grand Canyon, corroded metal, weathered paint, eroded hillsides -- the Japanese call the aesthetic "Wabi-sabi". For this reason I paint outside in the weather so the effects of the weather are reflected right on the canvas. The images I use are inspired by traditional motifs of Tibetan and Zen Buddhism, by Islamic calligraphy, or by the canvas itself in the process of developing.
